How we verify listings
Every one of the 4,033 stores in this directory comes from an official provincial or territorial list of legal cannabis retailers. Here is exactly how we use those lists, and what we do when something changes.
Our process
Start from the official list
We download each province’s and territory’s published list of legal retailers: the regulator’s list where private stores are licensed, or the government retailer’s store list where it runs the stores. We don’t add stores from other directories, social media or tips.Keep only stores that may sell
Where a list includes other records, we keep only stores that can legally sell. In Ontario we use only the AGCO’s “Authorized to Open” layer, not applications in progress or cancelled authorizations. Stores that are licensed but not yet open are labelled that way.Place each store on the map
We use the registry’s coordinates when it has them. Otherwise we look up the address with OpenStreetMap Nominatim, and mark the pin as approximate when we can only place the town.Show the source and date
Every store page names its source, links to it and shows the date we last checked it. We keep registry facts (name, address, licence details) as the registry publishes them.Check again periodically
We refresh our copy of each list periodically, not on a fixed public schedule. The dates below show when each source was last checked.Let owners verify and update
Owners can claim a listing for free. We verify them with a one-time code sent to the email on the registry record or to an address at their website’s domain, or by manual review, which usually means a call to the store’s listed phone number. Verified owners can add hours, delivery details and menus, but can’t change registry facts.
Corrections, closures and removal
- If a listing is wrong, or a store has closed or lost its licence, email hello@wherestheweedat.ca with the page link. We check it against the official source and correct or remove the listing.
- Verified owners can remove their own listing from the owner dashboard at any time, and restore it later.
- When a store drops off its official list, we review it by hand before marking it closed; nothing is removed automatically. Closed and removed listings return a “gone” page and drop out of our sitemap, maps and statistics.
- Store logos are shown only to help visitors recognise a store. They belong to their owners and come from the store’s own website or the owner. We remove a logo on request: use “Request removal” on the store page or contact us.
- If the official list itself is wrong, only the regulator can fix it. Contact the regulator or government retailer for your region (links below).
