Buying cannabis legally in Calgary
Last reviewed · Based on official government sources
Calgary has one of the largest numbers of licensed cannabis stores of any city in our directory. Alberta’s legal age of 18 applies, but Calgary’s own rules on public consumption are much stricter than the province’s.
Cannabis rules in Calgary come mainly from the Government of Alberta and federal law. This guide summarizes them and links to the official sources. For more detail, see Buying cannabis legally in Alberta.
Our directory lists 201 licensed cannabis stores in Calgary, from official registry data. See all Calgary dispensaries.
Who can sell cannabis legally
In Alberta, only private retail stores licensed by Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) can sell non-medical cannabis. The AGLC publishes a cannabis licensee search you can use to confirm a store. Store hours can fall between 9 a.m. and 2 a.m., but municipalities can shorten them.
Since March 8, 2022, licensed stores with an operating physical location can sell online and deliver if they have an AGLC endorsement. The government’s former online store is no longer in business. Endorsed retailers must show their licence numbers, store names and addresses, and a link to the AGLC licensee search, on their website’s homepage. Food delivery and ride-hailing apps cannot deliver cannabis.
Age and possession limits
- You must be 18 or older. No one under 18 may enter a cannabis store.
- You can have up to 30 grams of dried cannabis, or the equivalent, in public, and each purchase is limited to 30 grams.
- Adults may grow up to four plants per household.
Provincial rules on where you can use cannabis
The AGLC’s CannabisSense site says adults may use cannabis in single-family homes and in locations their municipality allows. Use is banned in any motor vehicle, except one used as a temporary residence such as a parked RV. Public smoking or vaping is prohibited anywhere tobacco is restricted, where children might be present, and on hospital or school property.
Calgary’s public consumption rules
The City of Calgary does not allow recreational cannabis to be consumed in public places, in any form, including edibles. A violation can mean a $100 ticket. The city says no designated public consumption areas have been approved. In practice, that means using cannabis only on private property where the owner allows it.
Vehicles and driving
Using cannabis in a vehicle is banned, and driving while impaired by cannabis is a criminal offence across Canada. Keep cannabis in closed packaging and out of reach of the driver and passengers.
A quick checklist for Calgary

- Do not order through food delivery or ride-hailing apps.

- Follow the city’s public consumption bylaw.
- Never use cannabis in a vehicle, and never drive impaired.
Using our Calgary store list
Our Calgary page gives an overview with a map, and the full Calgary dispensary list shows every licensed cannabis store we have on record in the city, taken from Alberta’s official licensing data. Each listing shows the store’s address and, where we have them, hours and contact details. There is also a page for stores that have confirmed delivery.
We do not rank stores, review them, or recommend products. Some listings may be paid placements; these are always labelled “Sponsored.” Licences can change, so if you want to be certain, confirm a store against the official provincial list before you visit. See how to read a store listing.
Visiting from outside Canada
If you are visiting, remember that it is illegal to take cannabis across Canada’s international borders in either direction, even to a place where it is legal. Do not try to take cannabis home with you. See travelling with cannabis and the first-time visitor FAQ.
